A look at Conservatism from a Latina’s perspective.
Nice take from Alicia, too bad there aren’t more Hispanics out there that see the light:
Why I am a Latina Conservative

This is an op-ed I wrote for El Diario, the oldest and largest Spanish language paper in the city. Here is the English translation:
Why I am a Latina Conservative.
An AP journalist once asked me why I was a conservative since I had grown up poor in the barrio. I answered him I had no choice. I wanted to get out.
As a teen, I would spend my summers sitting outside the fire escape daydreaming to escape the vermin infested apartment I shared with my five siblings. But it was the height of the Cold War and my cynicism intruded these thoughts. I told myself not to be surprised if after I had finally succeeded in my life, the communists would win and take everything away from me.
Back then I was very fortunate to have gone to parochial elementary and high school when they were staffed by nuns and were tuition free. The nuns did not care about the color of my skin, my poverty or my dysfunctional home environment. They did not lower their educational standards to salve my self esteem. They expected me to do well. They also taught me how to look deeply into issues and it is for this reason that I am a conservative.

There are plenty of us. We have no one to speak for us. I’m so happy she wrote this in El Diario where she can spread the truth
Maybe I was harsh in how I stated it, but I do wish the word would get around to the majority of hard working, family oriented Latinos.
I think their eyes would be opened wide, if they only knew.
